Italy is a fantastic country to visit or study in, and as an international student, you may do both.

You can't go wrong studying in Italy, which is home to one of the world's oldest universities, the University of Bologna, which also pioneered the modern university system. Admitted students are often ranked based on their prior grade point average (GPA). Check with your preferred school to determine the minimal GPA required to be eligible for the degree you want to pursue.

For certain specialized fields of study, you may be required to take unique admission examinations, such as:

  • Medicine  

  • Architecture 

  • Engineering

Italian universities have study programs that are taught in both Italian and English. Most English study programs, however, are only offered at the postgraduate level (Master's degrees and PhD programs).

How much does it cost to study in Italy?
Tuition expenses for a public higher education in Italy can range from 900 to 4,000 Euros per year on average. Private institutions in Italy are substantially more expensive than public universities, with yearly tuition ranging from 6,000 to 20,000 Euros.

Scholarships from the Italian government are available to international students. These are available to international students studying in Italy.

Student accommodation in Italy is more expensive in larger cities, with prices ranging from €300 to €600 per month depending on size, proximity to the city center, and distance from college.

What are the admission criteria for studying at an Italian university?
Students in Sri Lanka must apply through the Italian Embassy in their home country. Contact the Italian embassy in mid-April to mid-May to get a Letter of Academic Eligibility and Suitability (Dichiarazione di Valoro in Loco). After submitting your pre-application to your Italian Embassy, they will forward your papers to the institution of your choice.

Is IELTS a requirement for studying in Italy?
Students who can demonstrate that English was the medium of instruction for at least three years of their Bachelor's degree are free from submitting any English language certification. Other than that, TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, and PTE Academic are all acceptable.

When are the university intakes?

Admission to Italian universities and colleges is available through two intakes each year. The first begins in September and lasts through January or February of the following year. The second semester begins in February and concludes in July.

How many hours a week can an international student work while studying in Italy?
Anyone with a student visa in Italy can work up to 20 hours per week on a legitimate part-time contract. You may, however, work additional hours during vacation times.

In Italy, how long does a post-study work visa last?
International (non-EU/EEA) students studying or desiring to study in Italy have the option of staying for up to 12 months after finishing their education. International students on a student visa studying in Italy may be able to apply for a permesso di attesa occupazione, or 'temporary stay permission.' This work visa permits overseas students attending Italian higher education institutions to stay in the country after completing their studies and look for jobs for a maximum of 12 months. This one-year student visa extension also serves as a work permit for overseas students wishing to work in Italy full-time or part-time.
